FAQs

Does my pet need to be fasted (no food) prior to an appointment?

Yes, the pet should be fasted after 10pm the night prior to the appointment. Fasting helps image the liver, stomach, gall bladder and intestines more thoroughly. Often fasted blood tests are recommended which may also require fasting. If sedation is required it is optimal that the pet be fasted. DO NOT RESTRICT WATER unless advised by your veterinarian.

Exceptions: Diabetics, puppies or kittens should not be fasted.

Does my pet need to be shaved for an ultrasound ?

Yes, shaving is required for optimal contact between the ultrasound probed and the skin. Fur can interfere with seeing internal structures well.

Will my pet need sedation ?

Less than 10% of patients require sedation. Sedation is considered if the pet appears stressed or if safety for the pet or staff is a concern. The patient’s clinical status is taken into consideration whenever sedation is required. Sedation is required for some fine needle aspirates. Heavy sedation or anesthesia is required for biopsies.

How will my pet stay still for an ultrasound ?

Oddly enough, most patients are very relaxed lying on their back in the soft “U” shaped trough. Sometimes they even fall asleep in the dimly lit, quiet room, especially when they have lots of TLC from the technical team member who is safely holding them.

Do you perform heart echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds) ?

No, any cardiac concerns are referred to a Veterinary Cardiologist. In some cases there may be a Mobile Board Certified Veterinary Cardiologist who services your area.

How do I pay ?

Your veterinarian will provide an estimate for Dr. Foster’s services. You will pay your veterinary clinic, as you would for any other services with them, and as their payment policy permits.

What if I have an emergency ?

Contact your veterinarian if you have any questions at anytime about your pet. If it is outside of their clinic hours your veterinarian will have a recording that will list the emergency clinics in your area. Your veterinarian will also have a notice on their door directing you to the closest emergency clinic.
